Uno splendido angolo di verde dentro la città, un museo all’aperto che vanta oltre duecento anni di attività, questo è l’Orto Botanico: discover orto botanico with esn.
L’origine risale agli ultimi decenni del XVIII secolo nel regno di Napoli e di Sicilia, evento determinante fu, nel 1779, la fondazione della Regia Accademia degli Studi di Palermo con l’istituzione della cattedra di Storia naturale e Botanica.
Il prestigio e la necessità di sempre maggiori spazi ne suggeriranno la collocazione nel piano di S. Erasmo, accanto alla pubblica Villa Giulia. Tale collocazione, sopravvive sino ai giorni nostri.
Degno di nota è inoltre l’Erbario costituito nei primi del XIX secolo. Le sue collezioni (piante vascolari, felci, muschi, epatiche, alghe ma anche funghi e licheni) provengono, oltre che dalla Sicilia, da diverse parti del mondo come Australia, Africa, America centrale e meridionale, Europa, ecc.
Ad oggi, l’Orto Botanico è un’istituzione dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo e costituisce la più rilevante struttura didattico - scientifica del Dipartimento di Scienze Botaniche.

A wonderful green spot in the city, an open air museum active for more than two hundred years – this is the Botanical Garden.
The Garden originated in the last decades of the 18th century in the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily, with founding of the Royal Academy of Palermo (with Chair of Natural History and Botany being a part of it) in 1779 being the event that gave a start to it.
The growing prestige and the need for more and more space had suggested the location in the plan of St. Erasmus, near the public Villa Giulia. The location stays the same until today.
Noteworthy is also the Herbarium formed in the early 19th century. The collections of which it consists (vascular plants, ferns, mosses, liverworts, algae but also fungi and lichens) have been brought there not only from Sicily, but also from various parts of the world such as Australia, Africa, Central and South America, Europe, etc.
Nowadays the Botanical Garden is an institution of the University of Palermo and is the most important educational structure for the Department of Botanical Science.
