Lo storico Giuseppe Pitrè riuscì a salvare dalla completa distruzione i graffiti lasciati dai prigionieri dell'Inquisizione in alcune celle delle Carceri segrete. Li portò alla luce di persona, lavorando di scalpello giorno e notte.
La storia di Palazzo Steri è intessuta di eventi cruenti, l’ultimo dei Chiaramonte, ad esempio, fu sconfitto e decapitato dagli Aragonesi, proprio nello spiazzo davanti al suo palazzo.
